The July Garden Discovery Program celebrated the bounty of Maude's Garden in the summer! Participants shared what they were noticing in the garden this morning. It was the color that stood out for many. Everyone noticed the brilliant oranges and reds of the feathery celosia (see-low-zhuh). One participant chose to share about her feelings on being in the garden. "I've come here several times for this program," she said, while smelling some mint that we passed around the group. "I have to say, it's pleasure."
Our project got everyone creating little succulent gardens planted in oyster shells. Peach Jack, HTR, horticultural therapist, had brought these oyster shells from her home. They were bright white with purple streaks, some had smooth stones embedded on their rough, barnacle-covered exteriors. There deep openings made perfect vessels for soil and succulents. Participants will place these creations in their own homes or yards, and we invited people to place some extras in their chosen location within Maude's Garden.
The Garden Discovery Program is a partnership of UW MBWC and Seattle Parks and Recreation, with support from Aegis Living Assisted Living and Memory Care communities.
