Welcome to the Maude's Garden Collection, an exhibit of nature-inspired art by members of the Memory Hub community. These paintings reflect the artists’ experiences in Maude's Garden, WA State’s first public memory garden.
A memory garden is a type of therapeutic green space designed to provide healing and empowering experiences for people living with dementia and their caregivers. This artwork is a tangible example of how gardens can promote creativity and self-expression for people living with dementia, alongside our entire community.
Over years, we’ve seen how time in Maude’s Garden can evoke moments of joy, surprise and wonder and prompt verbal expression. A sprig of thyme or oregano may conjure echoes of comforting times in one’s past and present. These artworks showcase personal celebrations of these impactful moments in time. These works are other ways of ‘remembering’ the garden. With this exhibit, we are building the legacy of Maude’s Garden.
The inspiration for this exhibit occurred in 2023 when Susan Baker, an Elderwise Adult Day participant, painted the fountain in Maude’s Garden (featured in the virtual exhibit). Newly aware of the garden-related paintings emerging from Memory Hub programs, I began to help showcase this nature-inspired creativity - and to explore the synergy between nature and art. These efforts have culminated in the Maude’s Garden Collection.
